Memory has something artistic about it, because the reality in it has been modified and perfected by the imagination.

The Tourist, in the order of appearance, is the seventh character encountered in Yasmine’s quest for the Heptahedron.

Equipped with a third eye (a camera) and solid armour (bucket hat, sunglasses, bumbag, and tanning cream), the Tourist travels the world energised and on the lookout. “I am a memories hunter!” he says. Despite the faults that are attributed to the Tourist, who is mainly accused of fuelling superficial consumerism and of participating in the world’s collapse through the industrial expansion of travel, this individual is nevertheless in search of sense. Indeed, the Tourist is hunting for memories; the very memories that prove our existence, our otherness, and which make us unique beings with something singular to share with the other. With all their senses alert, in the middle of Venice’s Piazza San Marco or at the top of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Tourist becomes immersed in all manner of unimaginable situations in order to “take” memories. As the psychologist Christof Kuhbandner points out: “To become a souvenir, the event experienced will only be anchored in memory if it possesses a novelty value that distinguishes it in part from the content already stored. This is why a dog that brings back a stick will generally not leave a significant trace in our memory, but a dog playing the piano will.”

Don’t works of art also try to play the piano, in order to remain engraved in our memories? Isn’t it through their exceptional character, singularity, or exoticism that they enter our minds? And isn’t memory the most formidable art critic?

To bring the Tourist’s memories to life, this exhibition unites the exotic works of Daniel Buren, Sol Calero, and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster.

Middag med Godfrey is a pop-up food concept by Godfrey Manoharan. The concept was established for the first time at Victoria Cafe & Pub, February 2022, where the concept garnered high interest and quickly became fully booked. This pop-up concept has taken Bergen by storm, with plans to soon expand unto Oslo. With focus on authentic Tamil food from Sri Lanka, Manoharan wishes to invite everyone to a meal they will not soon forget.

This week, (27-29. October) Michelle Zhao & Lorayne Teo will prepare and serve their unique weekly menu, together with Ny sjanse.

Michelle and Lorayne will be presenting a 3-course meal featuring flavours from their homelands. To start with, a Yunnanese salad often eaten during the Ching Ming Festival (tomb sweeping day), followed by an everyday noodle dish from Singapore, and finishing off with an interpretation of a South East Asian dessert.

Michelle Zhao currently lives in Bergen, Norway, but she grew up in the southern Chinese province of Yunnan. She is co-owner of the restaurant Banzha (which opened in May 2022). She loves to host dinner at home, where she cooks mainly Yunnanese dishes. Spreading the joy of good company while having delicious food is one of the happiest things she could think of.

La Cantina de la Touriste: Guest chef dinners with Michelle Zhao & Lorayne Teo

The cantine at Engen behandlingssenter, Kafé Mat & prat is transformed into La Cantina de la Touriste as part of Bergen Assembly 2022, Yasmine and the Seven Faces of the Heptahedron 8.9.—6.11.2022. The artist, Sol Calero, presents a vibrant and permanent installation in the cantine run by Ny sjanse, a work qualification program for immigrants in Bergen.

During Bergen Assembly 2022, guest chefs work in collaboration with Ny Sjanse to serve special weekly three-course menus for 300 NOK.

This week, (27-29. October) Michelle Zhao & Lorayne Teo will prepare and serve their unique weekly menu, together with Ny sjanse.

Michelle and Lorayne will be presenting a 3-course meal featuring flavours from their homelands. To start with, a Yunnanese salad often eaten during the Ching Ming Festival (tomb sweeping day), followed by an everyday noodle dish from Singapore, and finishing off with an interpretation of a South East Asian dessert.

Michelle Zhao currently lives in Bergen, Norway, but she grew up in the southern Chinese province of Yunnan. She is co-owner of the restaurant Banzha (which opened in May 2022). She loves to host dinner at home, where she cooks mainly Yunnanese dishes. Spreading the joy of good company while having delicious food is one of the happiest things she could think of.

Exhibition walk with guest: Ida Lødemel Tvedt

Starting at KODE 1, we will experience the art works by Daniel Buren and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster together.

For this exhibition walk we are joined by author and Side Magazine-contributor, Ida Lødemel Tvedt. Her texts have been printed in N+1, Guernica, Das Magazin, Vagant, Dag og Tid, and numerous other publications. In 2021 she was awarded Arne Hestenes journalist prize. She has written the text “Disorientation Station” for Bergen Assembly’s own magazine: Side Magazine (Which you can read / purchase at Bergen Assembly’s office, Bergen Kunsthall, or through Bergen Assembly’s web page).

She will also be reading some extracts from her book “The Mariana Trench”, as we walk over to Cantina De La Touriste (Kafé Mat & prat), which in addition to being a functional cantina/restaurant, is also an artwork by Sol Calero. Here we will continue our conversations.

Lotta Olsson is the owner and head chef of Lola in Bergen. “For me, the most important thing in the restaurant is to create a place where guests and employees feel good, lower their shoulders and have a good time together. The food we cook at Lola is honest, with big, clean flavors that make you happy. For our weekend at La Cantina I will bring many years of experience in professional kitchens and restaurants in different countries. It will be so nice to pass on my knowledge to everyone in the kitchen and at the same time, learn new flavors and combinations to make something fun and delicious for the guests of the weekend. The menu will, as always at Lola, be based on nice ingredients that we season in our own way: with flavours from spice racks from around the world.”

Join us for the last meal at La Cantina de la Touriste, during Bergen Assembly 2022, on Sunday 6th of November! First come first serve!

The artist behind La Cantina de la Touriste, Sol Calero and her studio manager Rebeca Pérez Gerónimo will make arepas for us inside the installation that has been functioning as a kafé and restaurant during the runtime of Bergen Assembly 2022.
