Join the opening party of Bergen Assembly 2022 at Grand Bergen, on September 8th!

We are proud to present the live event EXOTOURISME by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Julien Perez at Grand Bergen.

Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster is an influential contemporary artist who draws on the synthetic French new wave of Lizzy Mercier Descloux and Serge Gainsbourg to weave a seductive, neon-soaked sound evocative of Paris’ nefarious ’80s underground.

The concert is followed by a DJ by Espen Iden.

Constructed aLifveForm Transformalor (Transformella malor) follows their prescribed algorithmical path around the world in a series of psycho-real research trips.
Conceived out of repeated actions, linguistic interventions and condensations on various platforms, the journey functions as a foray into reprovolutionary territory.

NOTHING MORE for voices and organ by Augustin Maurs at Domkirken
Join the opening weekend of Bergen Assembly 2022, on September 9th!

Augustin Maurs has developed a new composition in collaboration with Volve Vokal choir, Thea Meidell Sjule, Roar Sletteland and Sigurd Øgaard.

We are happy to invite you to the premier of a new composition by Augustin Maurs developed in collaboration with Volve Vokal choir, Thea Meidell Sjule, Roar Sletteland and Sigurd Øgaard.

The concert will take place in Domkirken.

Nothing More is a “manifestation” for voices and organ and explores the possibility of the voice as a source of both sonic and political resilience. Augustin Maurs explores the conditions of our musicality, as opposed to simply making music. For Nothing More (2022), he spent time in situ on the Norwegian archipelago, Svalbard, walking on ice that is millions of years old, and contemplating the relationship between musical and geological time.

Doors: 19:30 (ID: 0)
Tickets: Kr 100

Purchased tickets can not be refunded.

The performance is a collaboration with Domkirken in Bergen, with contribution from Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts (BEK) and funded by Bergen municipality, Arts Council Norway and Institut Français.

The Fortune Teller
ATAMATA I by Jessika Khazrik w/ காவடி, Aïsha Devi, Grinderteeth, Jimmy Blue Star, MAWADa

Amplifying an urgent search for collective transcendence and transformational infrastructure, ATAMATA brings together a spectral club exhibition with a 4-day South and East-oriented music and performance club program full of apparitions, epiphanic intermissions and incomputable assemblies. Concocted by artist, DJ, technologist and educatress Jessika Khazrik with live performances by friends and allies, the techno rave performance series and exhibition re-addresses club spaces as templar and serendipitous places of techno-political congregation and collective attunement with an ability to re-create and host different times and desires into the present. Through revisiting the unifying and anti-militarist history of techno in the past, present and future tenses and the potential of club spaces as social spaces of transclusive ritual, communal solace and serendipitous bonding, ATAMATA attempts to playfully delve into the links between the collectivity through anonymity attained in clubs and that experienced in spaces dedicated to collective strategy, solidarity and study.

Schwarmwesen geopathologos [6.1.7] Bryggens Beifang
Join Schwarmwesen (fed and cared for by JP Raether) as it guides you on a performative walking tour of Bryggen.

Emerging in sites of cultural and economic significance, toxic swales of tourism and trade, Schwarmwesen’s appearances make visible flows of humans and capital.
It traces the infrastructural unconscious that’s rooted in the corridor of Belt and Road ending on a Karachi Beach or Vasari’s bridged palace escape route for the Florence kings.
In Bryggen, the quarter around Vågen bay in Bergen’s historical city center and main port, the swarm without a swarm traces the Hanseatic roots and medieval routes of European trade, collecting you-as-body-parts and souvenir and them-as-particles of language, coalescing into our own dreamed up infrastructure. This performance is part of the opening weekend of Bergen Assembly 2022.

The appearance is limited to 20 guests, on a first come first serve basis.

September 10th, 14:00-15:30 is now fully booked.

The Bonimenteur
Celebration of Life by Hammal Family—Live Ululation Performance
This live performance is a part of the opening days of Bergen Assembly 2022—Yasmine and the Seven Faces of the Heptahedron.

Presented inside the exhibition dedicated to the Bonimenteur, this live performance activates the work by artist duo GRAU called Bonfire.
Bonfire is at once sculpture and applied product design, and it asks us to consider the boundaries between art, technology, and anthropology, using light as a functional object with artistic purpose.
It offers a way to re-conceive the applied arts’ capability to stimulate the primal uses and the deeply engrained phenomenology of light: a universal medium that can illuminate our relationship with ourselves and spark deeper connections with others, as well as the world around us.

Visitors are encouraged to use Bonfire as a social gathering point and a place for contemplation.

Admission to the exhibition is free for the entire run-time of Bergen Assembly 2022.

The Coalman
Claude Debussy concert
A performance of Debussy’s composition, Les soirs illuminés par l’ardeur du charbon (Evenings Lit by the Burning Coals, 1917), by students from the Cultural School in Bergen (Bergen Kulturskole).

In the winter of 1917, towards the end of his life, the composer Claude Debussy found himself in dire straits. Not only had he endured cancer, he also faced extreme poverty. That winter was among the coldest ever experienced in France, which was undergoing a severe coal shortage due to Germany’s wartime occupation of the east. Debussy, who was already requesting advances from his publisher, and too cold to even play the piano, was now driven literally to beg for coal in order for his family to survive the brutal winter.

Debussy encountered a coal vendor named Monsieur Croquin. After a heated exchange marked by intense negotiation, Debussy wrote an entirely new musical composition, Les soirs illuminés par l’ardeur du charbon (Evenings Lit by the Burning Coals), which he finished in March 1917 and gave to Croquin, in return receiving a bag of coal.

The composition was not publicly known before Debussy´s handwritten manuscript appeared in an auction in 2001. The history behind the composition is told through various facsimiles and original notes, which is appears as a part of the exhibition around “The Coalman” at Gyldenpris Kunsthall. The exhibition is one of seven exhibitions dedicated each to one character as part of the contemporary art triennial, Bergen Assembly 2022. All exhibitions are open from 8th September until 6th November.

We are very please that the piano students from Bergen cultural school´s (Bergen Kulturskole) in-depth program for Musical specialisation, have wished to contribute towards this project through solitary interpretation and practicing of the play. This interpretations will be performed at Gyldenpris Kunsthall, Thursday 22th September, 19:00. The exhibition will be open before the concert, where there will also be a simple café service inside the exhibition hall.

Gathering: Objects and their stories

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in a museum? What roles do a museum actually have, and what happens with the objects that arrive at the museum, and from where do they come from? Why do we gather? When and how did the museums came to be? What happens when objects are gathered into a larger collection? We invite the audience to join us on a “Gathering” (Samling), where we together with employees at Bymuseet i Bergen - Kari Skarprud Pettersen (Head of Exhibition & public outreach) og Sølvi Vik (Head of Collection Management), will gain insight into how museums work with objects and storytelling.

This event is a collaboration between Bymuseet i Bergen and Bergen Assembly, in connection with the exhibitions Eyeliner (Denicolai & Provoost), Stream of Stories (Katia Kameli), Pocket Folklore (Shirin Sabahi), and the mediation programme at Bergen Asesmbly. These exhibitions can be seen at Bryggens Museum. The conversation will be carried out in Norwegian.

Participation is free of charge but requires pre-registration via e-mail.

ATAMATA III

Amplifying an urgent search for collective transcendence and transformational infrastructure, ATAMATA brings together a spectral club exhibition with a 4-day South and East-oriented music and performance club program full of apparitions, epiphanic intermissions and incomputable assemblies. Concocted by artist, DJ, technologist and educatress Jessika Khazrik with live performances by friends and allies, the techno rave performance series and exhibition re-addresses club spaces as templar and serendipitous places of techno-political congregation and collective atunement with an ability to re-create and host different times and desires into the present.

The cantine at Engen behandlingssenter, Kafé Mat & prat is transformed into La Cantina de la Touriste as part of Bergen Assembly 2022, Yasmine and the Seven Faces of the Heptahedron 8.9.—6.11.2022. The artist, Sol Calero, presents a vibrant and permanent installation in the cantine run by Ny sjanse, a work qualification program for immigrants in Bergen.

During Bergen Assembly 2022, guest chefs work in collaboration with Ny Sjanse to serve special weekly three-course menus for 300 NOK.

This week, (27-29. October) Michelle Zhao & Lorayne Teo will prepare and serve their unique weekly menu, together with Ny sjanse.

Michelle and Lorayne will be presenting a 3-course meal featuring flavours from their homelands. To start with, a Yunnanese salad often eaten during the Ching Ming Festival (tomb sweeping day), followed by an everyday noodle dish from Singapore, and finishing off with an interpretation of a South East Asian dessert.

Michelle Zhao currently lives in Bergen, Norway, but she grew up in the southern Chinese province of Yunnan. She is co-owner of the restaurant Banzha (which opened in May 2022). She loves to host dinner at home, where she cooks mainly Yunnanese dishes. Spreading the joy of good company while having delicious food is one of the happiest things she could think of.

Lorayne Teo is from Singapore and has been living in Bergen the last few years. She finds joy in cooking for others and sharing her heritage food with the people in her second home, Norway. Lorayne is excited to present a taste of South East Asia at La Cantina, and hopes that the guests will enjoy these flavours from her home.

The Coalman
Exhibition walk with activity at Gyldenpris Kunsthall

Join us at Gyldenpris Kunsthall, where we will be using charcoal and paper to draw, record and imagine our experience at the exhibition, with a particular focus on Augustin Maurs’ sound based installation Nothing More, where Maurs is exploring the voice as a source for both sonic and political resilience.

The works in the exhibition at Gyldenpris Kunsthall consists of Claude Debussy - a panel exhibition with letters, and a musical score that was used as a means of payment for a bag of coal in a time of desperation, vitrines with a series of vernacular coal sculptures made by coal miners, and Augustin Maurs’ project Nothing More.

No registration is required.

Family Workshop: Coal drawing at Gyldenpris Kunsthall

We will have charcoal and paper to draw as we experience the different works in the exhibition.

The exhibition is divided into in three different artistic projects, and consists of sound recordings, letters and a selection of coal sculptures from coal miners. We ask ourselves questions like: can we imagine what sounds look like? What do different sounds make us feel or think?

Materials are provided by us.

Exhibition walk with guest: Ida Lødemel Tvedt

Starting at KODE 1, we will experience the art works by Daniel Buren and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster together.

For this exhibition walk we are joined by author and Side Magazine-contributor, Ida Lødemel Tvedt. Her texts have been printed in N+1, Guernica, Das Magazin, Vagant, Dag og Tid, and numerous other publications. In 2021 she was awarded Arne Hestenes journalist prize. She has written the text “Disorientation Station” for Bergen Assembly’s own magazine: Side Magazine (Which you can read / purchase at Bergen Assembly’s office, Bergen Kunsthall, or through Bergen Assembly’s web page).

She will also be reading some extracts from her book “The Mariana Trench”, as we walk over to Cantina De La Touriste (Kafé Mat & prat), which in addition to being a functional cantina/restaurant, is also an artwork by Sol Calero. Here we will continue our conversations.

Lotta Olsson is the owner and head chef of Lola in Bergen. “For me, the most important thing in the restaurant is to create a place where guests and employees feel good, lower their shoulders and have a good time together. The food we cook at Lola is honest, with big, clean flavors that make you happy. For our weekend at La Cantina I will bring many years of experience in professional kitchens and restaurants in different countries. It will be so nice to pass on my knowledge to everyone in the kitchen and at the same time, learn new flavors and combinations to make something fun and delicious for the guests of the weekend. The menu will, as always at Lola, be based on nice ingredients that we season in our own way: with flavours from spice racks from around the world.”

Launch of Side Magazine Special Edition

We are excited to invite you to the launch party for the special edition of Side Magazine, at our Open Office Bar!

Come by for some snacks and drinks and tunes by DJ Daijobu!

Side Magazine special edition
While the first seven issues of Side Magazine gave shape to the seven character exhibitions staged at Bergen Assembly, this special edition focuses on the artists and the artworks that give those characters life in Bergen from 8.9. to 6.11.2022.

This 8th special edition of Side Magazine doubles as the exhibition catalogue where you are invited to experience this fourth edition of the Bergen Assembly, convened by Saâdane Afif, as a journey that takes place not only in the city of Bergen, but which also meanders across the pages of this special 8th issue of Side Magazine. We are excited to share this view into what is unfolding through-out Bergen — an assembly consisting of exhibitions, mediation programmes, performances, concerts, and other gatherings, under the title: Yasmine and the Seven Faces of the Heptahedron.

It includes a walk trough of all the exhibitions with documentation of the works by Daniel Buren, Sol Calero, Claude Debussy, Denicolai & Provoost, Neue Gestaltung, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, GRAU, George Grosz, Gruppo Petrolio, Katia Kameli, Jessika Khazrik, Lars Korff Lofthus, Bernhard Martin, Augustin Maurs, Protektorama, Schwarmwesen, and Transformella (fed and cared for by JP Raether), Shirin Sabahi, Miriam Stoney, Alvaro Urbano, and a selection of vernacular coal sculptures by miners.

Side Magazine special edition features an editorial by Yasmine d’O, Curator of Bergen Assembly 2022 and Executive Editor of Side Magazine, a foreword by the Director of Bergen Assembly, Ingrid Haug Erstad, and contributions by Louisa Elderton and Pablo Larios in the form of project texts and artist biographies.
